Nell Kathryn Young Obituary (1926 - 2012)

\ Nell Kathryn Young, 85, of Madisonville, KY, passed away 11:00 P.M., Sunday, May 21, 2012 at NHC Healthcare in Madisonville. \ \ She was born June 26, 1926 in Mortons Gap, KY to the late Claude and Magnolia Kirkman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Young; three sisters, Mabel Shultz, Hettie Kious, and Pearl Purdy. \ \ Nell was a graduate of Dawson Springs High School, after graduation was employed with Daylight Coal Company, Enro Shirt Company, Dr. James Salmons office, and Peabody Coal Company. She was also the first volunteer at the Western Kentucky Veterans Center of Hanson, KY where she was the first person to reach 1,000 hours of service. Nell served on the Board of Directors as treasurer for Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, first female member of the Elks Lodge #738 of Madisonville and a member of Greater Lighthouse Pentecostal Church of Madisonville. \ \ She was survived by two nephews, Cleates Purdy of Madisonville and Norton Kious of Centertown, KY; a niece, Shirley Purdy Meers, of Bloomington, IL; two grand nieces, Debbie Habermehl of Madisonville and Beth Clark or Russellville, KY; and two grand nephews, Jeff Purdy of Madisonville and Harold Gray Meers Jr. of Bloomington, IL. \ \ Funeral service will be 1:00 P.M. Friday, May 25, at Barnett-Strother Funeral Home. Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Mausoleum. \ \ Visitation will be 11:00 A.M. until service time on Friday at the funeral home. \ \ Pallbearers will be Cleates Purdy, Harold Meers, and Robert C. Purdy. \ \
