Mary D. Oates

Mrs. Mary D. Porter Oates, 89, of Madisonville, KY passed away at 2:20 A.M. Tuesday, January 6, 2009, at NHC Healthcare in Madisonville. \ She was born December 17, 1919 in Nebo, KY to the late Claud Porter and Eva Bell Porter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles K. Oates and two sisters, Emma Bell Leasure and Lora Lowrance. \ Mrs. Oates was a member of the First Baptist Church in Madisonville. \ She was a 1940 graduate of the University of Kentucky and taught school as a Home Economics teacher for many years. She was skilled in various kinds of needlework and was an excellent cook. She was loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed. \ Mrs. Oates is survived by one daughter, Kathy Oates Roos and husband, Steve of Atlanta, GA; one son, Omer Jay Oates and wife, Karen of Atlanta; one brother, Tommy Porter of Manitou, KY; five grandchildren, Rebecca Roos Borger and husband, Scott, Deborah Roos, Katie Oates, Trey Oates and Annie Oates; and several nieces and nephews. \ Funeral services will be held 1:30 P.M., Thursday, January 8, 2009 at Barnett-Strother Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Nysewander officiating. Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Madisonville. \ Friends may call from 5:00-7:00 P.M., Wednesday, January 7, 2009 and 12:30 P.M. until service time on Thursday at the funeral home. \ Memorials may take the form of donation to the First Baptist Church of Madisonville or the Alzheimers Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. \
