Richard Taylor "Dick" Wells Obituary (1937 - 2024)

Richard Taylor Wells (Dick), age 86, of Madisonville, KY, passed from this life peacefully on January 12, 2024 in Louisville, KY. He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Harry Wells and his brothers, Mac, Harry Jr., Jim Bob, and Charles Wells. Dick is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Eleanor (Ellie) Lee Wells, his sister Margaret Hallum (Larry), his daughters Dana Kellerman (David), Sherry Hughes, Laurie Smith (Brad), Suzanne Applegate (Chris) and former son-in-law Tom Hughes. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Sophie Cope (Don), Allie Kellerman, Carly Haggermaker (Jace), Hamilton Hughes (Savannah), Hayden, Sawyer and Riley Smith, Emma, Ben and Claire Applegate; seven great-grandchildren; in-laws Jean Wells, Joanne Wells, Harvey Oglesby, many nieces and nephews, and his treasured dog Annie. A lifelong resident of Hanson, KY, graduating from Hanson High School. Dick served in the U. S. Army in ASA intelligence and was promoted to Sergeant (SP 5). He farmed and worked for the L&N (CSX) railroad, retiring after 40 years. He traveled with Eleanor to Europe, Alaska, and Hawaii, but especially loved the Destin/Panama City area in Florida where he shared memorable times with his children and grandchildren. He belonged to Lakeshore Country Club, playing golf with friends and family. He was a member of the "hole in one" club. For many years, Dick enjoyed breakfast and talking UK basketball and politics with his fellow "Good Ole Boys" at his brother Charles' restaurant. Dick was loved and will be missed by all mentioned and many more. His faith was in Christ and his funeral will be officiated by Father Carl McCarthy of Christ the King at the Barnett Strother Funeral Home, Madisonville, KY, on Thursday, January 18, 2024. Visitation at 11:00 a.m., funeral at 1:00 p.m., followed by burial at the Westlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be the grandsons, and son-in-laws. Honorary pallbearers will be, David Stanciu, Harvey Oglesby, Larry Hallum, and Mike Wells. Memorial donations may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church.
